CALLING ALL GARDENERS
The Lake Samish Gardeners Group has been active for two years in May 2019. We generally have one monthly meeting (perhaps less in the summer) and we’ve had activities as well. Our regular meeting location is the West Lake Samish Fire Hall, but on occasion, we meet up at someone’s home. We are still looking for the ideal meeting day of the week and time, but mostly we meet Saturday mornings about 10:00. This is a very casual and congenial group. We enjoy talking about all things “garden.”
We try to share the latest and best information about various gardening happenings. There’s so much going on in this area it’s sometimes a lot to juggle with the needs and joys of our own gardens.
We usually have a Spring Luncheon, so check the Lake Samish Association Facebook page for up- coming dates.
For a couple seasons, our group has been helping one neighbor with her semi-annual dahlia routines. This involves digging up the tubers in the fall, then planting the tubers again in the spring. We’ve been fortunate to expand our own dahlia gardens with the shared tubers.
Last year, on Earth Day, our group worked at the Fire Hall to clean up the berries and overgrown vegetation. It’s expected this will turn into a regular maintenance practice and we’re looking for an energetic person to head up this worthy project.
This year we hope to spend some time on using natives in our gardens. Also, we’re looking for a better selection of shade plants. Do you have an unusual perennial to divide and share?
Here’s a very partial list of things we would like to do in this group: local garden tours, education (ex: native and animal proof plant selection), help locals with garden work, plant sales/exchanges, develop a community garden. New ideas are always welcome.
As we GROW this group, it’s inevitable we will need to have some folks from within the group take the lead on ideas/projects (or parts of these) we want to see actually happen. So consider the things you would like to do with this group and align with something you‘d love to see take place . . . volunteer to extend your gardening interests.
