Proposed Renovation of Public Boat Launch:
September 8, 2008
Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife owns and operates
the public boat launch facility on East Lake Samish Drive. We are
currently in the process of submitting a grant proposal for funding to
upgrade the existing site. Enclosed, please find the draft site plan,
which outlines the proposed design that will be submitted to the
Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO) for funding consideration. The
grant process involves a competitive process, and not all projects will
be funded. WDFW submitted a similar proposal in 2006, however, the
project was not funded at that time.
As you can see from the site plan, the improvements will include a new expanded double ramp, boarding float, handicap parking and access, designated parking, and vault toilets. It is unlikely that the parking area will be expanded due to wetland restrictions. It is the intent of the plan to increase available parking by installing angled designated parking which will maximize efficiency of the existing space.
The funding board (RCO) has requested that the neighbors be informed of the proposal so that any objections that may be brought forward would be brought forward early in the process rather than later, causing potential delays to the project. To date, all of my contacts with neighbors and users have been positive, and that positive support is considered during the decision makingprocess. Any support or objections you may have to the proposal would be appreciated.

Update (11-4-08)
A local homeowner requesting additional information from the Recreation & Conservation Office received the following note from Dan Haws (Outdoor Grants Manager): "Thank you for your email. I appreciate your concerns and would like to let you know that there will be a public meeting by the Funding Board on November 20, 2008 at 10:00 am [titled Boating Facilities Program for State Agencies: Review & Approval of Grants: Resolution #2008-53. Lake Samish is item #6 of #18]. This is the time when public testimony will be taken concerning specific projects and this would be the time for the residents of Lake Samish to voice their concern."
If you cannot attend this meeting it was suggested that you contact your local representative to voice your concern and have them attend the meeting on your behalf.
