Stormwater Plan
WHAT: The Whatcom County Stormwater Division is currently in the process of putting together a comprehensive Stormwater Plan for Lake Samish.
WHEN: In the fall of 2009 the Lake Samish Watershed Management Advisory Committee (LSWMAC) voted to “temporarily suspend” all activities. Established in 2003 by the Board of Commissioners for the Samish Water District its purpose was to give residents a forum for staying informed regarding issues relative to water quality within the area.
LSA ACTION: The
Association has requested to become part of an advisory group to the
Whatcom County Stormwater Division when this plan is created.
STATUS:
Update: June 2010: "In April, the Whatcom County Storm
Water Division held two public meetings regarding the ongoing
comprehensive stormwater management planning effort for the Lake Samish
Basin. In addition to identifying several stormwater
problem areas within the basin, public input identified the following
topics: forestry practices in the upper reaches of the basin, health
and public safety issues regarding recreational activities in and
around the lake, maintenance of road ditches and drainages around the
lake, potential impacts from the planned boat launch redevelopment by
WA Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, the current status of plans for a public
water system in the area, as well as the need for maintenance and
restoration of aquatic habitat around the lake. The planning team is
currently following up on the various topics raised at the meetings,
and will report back to the community through newsletters, the project
website and future public meetings. While the overall project
schedule has been extended past the deadlines outlined in the recent
public meetings, the planning team is still making measurable progress
in development of the stormwater plan. Current planning activities
include discussions with various stakeholders within the basin
regarding; forestry activities, planned development in the area,
maintenance of public roadways and drainage systems around the lake,
flooding issues in both Whatcom and Skagit Counties, and restoration of
aquatic habitat. In addition, hydrologic modeling activities are being
completed and the draft planning document is being compiled.
The current schedule is targeting completion of the draft plan by July 15th, 2010.
The planning team would like to extend their appreciation to the Lake
Samish Community for their interest and input into the process so
far, and to encourage the public to continue to stay involved in the
process as planning continues for the area."
