Vehicle Traffic - parking, speeding, etc.

WHAT:  Vehicle traffic is becoming a greater concern around the lake.  As many of you have known for quite some time, and new residents are just finding out, there has been an increasing number of “visitors” to our small lake community.  While these visitors are not normally a problem sometimes, on very hot and sunny weekends, they can overwhelm our Public Park and Public Boat Launch areas.  Some of them are becoming an increasing nuisance by parking in designated no-parking areas, crowding the streets (N. Lake Samish & E. Lake Samish) with their vehicle and/or boat by parking over the white fire line, speeding, trash, etc.  We all want to welcome visitors to our beautiful lake.  But we also want them to abide by the same rules and regulations we abide by
and to respect the people and property of our residents.

Note from Sgt. Steve Gatterman (Whatcom Sheriff's Office) regarding patrol of the Lake Samish area:
"I assure you that we are very aware of the issues of speeding and parking around Lake Samish, especially on hot days.  We have been dealing with this as long as I can  remember.  Of the four traffic deputies I have in the unit, one is assigned to your corner of the county.  He is a hard working guy and always tries to hit the "hot" spots on nice days.  Unfortunately his ability to do this depends on what other priority calls he is assigned to that day.  His area covers everything south of Smith Road and east of the Guide Meridian,
including the Acme Valley, Sudden Valley, Glenhaven, Geneva, North Bellingham,
and Lake Samish.  So as you can see it is sometimes a challenge for him to get
to the areas he knows that need to be checked."

WHEN:  A letter was mailed June 26, 2009 to residents nearest these public areas.  This letter called for action on the part of about 50 homeowners.  Contact Dan Bult if you would like to be involved.

LSA ACTION
:  At various Lake Samish Association meeting’s we have heard these complaints for a few years now but have not seen a reduction in this problem.  Therefore, for this upcoming summer we would like to propose an idea that may at least stabilize (if not diminish) this growing concern.  We recommend that we establish a Call Tree to flood the Sheriff’s office with phone calls of a complaint.
