WHAT: The Whatcom County Sheriff Marine Patrol unit utilizes several vessels to enforce water safety laws on the various bodies of water within Whatcom County, including Lake Samish.

WHEN
: No timeline has been given for returning Lake Samish boat.

LSA ACTION
:  We are monitoring this situation very closely and asking the Sheriff's office and County Executives to solve this issue immediately.

STATUS:  June 8, 2010: "With the boating season upon us, the Sheriff’s Office boating patrol program for Lake Samish has been launched!  During the last boating season, problems arose with access to funding for the program and resulted in limited patrols.  The situation has improved this year and it is anticipated that coverage will be provided on most weekends as well as some weekdays depending on weather and the volume of boating traffic.

Deputy Stu Smith retired and Deputy Chad Heinrich is now the boating program coordinator.  Deputy Heinrich has extensive training and experience in boating safety aspects of  law enforcement.  He will coordinate the assignment of other boating deputies to the Lake."

- Sheriff Bill Elfo
