Animal Control: Pets
WHAT: Animal control and rescue services, handled by the Whatcom Humane Society, protects the health and welfare of citizens by
managing the county’s companion animal population, enforcing rabies
prevention/intervention regulations and enforcing the provisions of the Animal
Control Ordinance. In addition, all dogs
must wear a collar with their tag firmly attached. The WHS humanely house and care for stray animals, unwanted,
abandoned or abused pets, and place healthy companion animals in new homes
through adoption. They provide proactive and ongoing public education and
information to the residents of Whatcom County.
Extensively trained Animal Control Officers are on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Officers investigate reports of animal cruelty and neglect, provide animal rescue to any animal in need, pick-up stray, injured or deceased animals and enforce laws that protect animals and people. If you are aware of an animal being abused or neglected, please call the Animal Control Office at (360) 733-2080.
Pet waste can be a potential problem for all bodies of water including Lake Samish. Did you know that this waste can contain as many as 75 diseases and viruses that can easily drain into our drinking water. Yuck! Please remember to keep your dog/cat/other pet in your yard and clean up after it.
